Procedures - Lasik
LASIK is simply an acronym that stands for Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis. It is the fastest growing vision correction procedure ever performed and has helped thousands of men and women worldwide reduce or eliminate their dependence on corrective eyewear. It is performed under a protective flap and combines the accuracy of the Excimer laser with the precision of today's advanced computer technology. The Excimer Lasers we use are "cold lasers" - or non-thermal light beams - the most sophisticated method in vision correction.
Ultraviolet light and high-energy pulses lasting only billionths of a second disrupt the molecular bonds between the corneal cells with extraordinary accuracy. Many ophthalmologists have found advantages in performing LASIK, and worldwide it is becoming the preferred treatment. The procedure is nearly painless and is performed under topical anesthesia. First, a thin layer of the cornea, 160 microns (20% of corneal depth), is folded back and lifted using a microkeratome or a laser. Then, in less than 60 seconds, ultraviolet light and high-energy pulses from the Excimer laser reshape the internal cornea.
With computer-guided precision, the Excimer laser vaporizes microscopic amounts of corneal tissue from the surface of the cornea, making the central cornea flatter. After the corneal tissue has been removed, the flap is replaced in its original position. Because of the cornea's bonding qualities, healing is rapid and there is no need for stitches. The flattened cornea is then able to focus light directly on the retina, thereby reducing nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.
We closely monitor our results to provide the best possible LASIK outcomes. Our facility is accredited by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities, a voluntary program of inspection in surgery facilities to ensure excellence and quality care to patients.
